Alexandrite is a precious stone that changes color depending on light sources. This extremely rare gem is blue-green under daylight and turns purple when exposed to incandescent (artificial) light. Alexandrite is considered to be a stone of good omen that can enhance its bearer’s intuition.
GEMOLOGY
Alexandrite is a variety of the mineral chrysoberyl which has a hardness of 8.5 on the 10 point Mohs hardness scale. It is typically transparent and may contain inclusions. Alexandrite displays a color-change effect that may be more or less evident. The color-change in Brazilian alexandrite is often very pronounced, which attributes to its superior quality and value.
WHY CHANGE COLOR
Alexandrite results from small scale replacement of aluminium by chromium oxide, which is responsible for the stone’s characteristic color change. The ideal color change is from bluish green to purple and it is dependant upon differences in light sources.
